Academic Track

The Academic Track in the new Strengthened Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum (fully rolling out in June 2026) has been redesigned to bridge the gap between high school and college more effectively.

The biggest shift is the removal of rigid “Strands” (like STEM, ABM, or HUMSS). Instead, the curriculum is built on a flexible system of core subjects and elective clusters.

  1. The Five Core Subjects

To reduce “curriculum congestion,” DepEd slashed the number of core subjects from 15 down to five. These are now taught for an entire year (160 hours each) to ensure deeper mastery:

  • Effective Communication / Mabisang Komunikasyon: (Aligned with college-level Purposive Communication)
  • General Mathematics: (Aligned with Mathematics in the Modern World)
  • General Science: (Aligned with Science, Technology, and Society)
  • Life and Career Skills: (Focuses on self-understanding and career discipline)
  • Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino: (Philippine History and Society)
  1. Elective Clusters (Replacing Strands)

Instead of being locked into one strand, Academic Track students choose subjects from clusters. This allows a student to “mix and match” based on their intended college major. The primary Academic clusters are:

  • STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
  • Business and Entrepreneurship: (Replaces ABM specialized subjects).
  • Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities: (Includes the former HUMSS and Arts & Design subjects).
  • Sports, Health, and Wellness: (Includes former Sports track subjects).
  1. The “Doorway Option”

This is the new “flexibility” feature. It allows Academic Track students to take electives from the TechPro Track (Technical-Professional) without switching tracks entirely.

  • Example: A student aiming for a degree in Computer Science (Academic Track) can use the doorway option to take a “Computer Programming” elective from the TechPro track.
